Natalie Tyler Tran is a video blogger on YouTube from Sydney, Australia, using the nickname communitychannel. She is a digital media student at the University of New South Wales, an amateur violinist and second-generation Vietnamese Australian.
Her videos include self-deprecating humor and stream-of-consciousness commentary on social dilemmas, such as how much money to spend on gifts for friends and what is appropriate telephone etiquette. Other videos include multi-role skits, where (with occasional exceptions), Tran plays all roles, combining multiple takes using video editing. Examples include dialog between the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy, and a practical joke by an ultrasound technician. More serious topics have included Tran’s responses to the February 2009 Victorian bushfires. Her video response to racist viewer feedback has been described as “astute and scathingly funny.” She has made several music videos, such as the “We Just Touched Awkwardly” song. Tran is an amateur violinist who has joked that no one is surprised when they learn an Asian plays a musical instrument. She displays her violin in many videos and has played it in one. She has recently asked for “challenges” for her to perform. The first challenge was for her to dance the Hoedown Throwdown from Disney’s Hannah Montana: The Movie. Tran has not used her vlog to discuss religion or politics, and has said that although she does not drink it is “not because of any beliefs,” but because she dislikes the taste and effects of alcohol.
Tran’s vlog features frequent pop culture references and insider jokes, such as describing the soundtrack to her summary of user feedback as “porno music/comment time” and picking an “ugly word” and “attractive word” for each video. Tran’s vlogs also contain elements of blue comedy. She currently ends every video with “YOUR MUM RATES ME,” a reference to the frequent “your mum” jokes she uses.
